It is important to build truth and self-worth into our lives and the lives of our family

2 Timothy 1:7 says:
For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.

This week, I am taking a closer look at a few Bible verses, which focus on confidence and self-esteem as reminders of our identity in Christ and the strength God gives us as a child of the King. As a Christian, I define self-esteem as having confidence that I am who God says I am. It’s not dependent on my own abilities – because those can be so unreliable, but instead it is knowing that God will equip me for the work He has set out for me to do. We can rely on the Truth of these verses.

Joshua 1:9
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.

When we don’t feel like we’re good enough, it’s easy to want to blend in, hide in the back, and avoid bringing any attention to our self. But God calls us to be strong and courageous! Not in our own abilities or strengths, but because God promises that He will be with us wherever we go. We can live in confidence because of His strength.

Jeremiah 17:7
But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord,
whose confidence is in him.

There is a strong message here that will help us when we feel weak and inadequate which is, we can rely on God to bless us and lead us. We don’t have to be the smartest, the most successful, the most productive, the best trained, the strongest or the most anything. Our job is to do our best and trust that the Lord will work through that. And we can have confidence that He always will.

Psalm 27:3
Though an army surround me,
my heart will not fear;
though war break out against me,
even then I will be confident.

It can be scary when we are in a situation that is out of our control. I’ve been in places where it feels like I’m surrounded by those who don’t have my best interests at heart. I know how terrifying it feels when hurtful words are thrown at me. Words that cut to the bone and destroy the things I desire most – love, affection, acceptance, security. There are times when other people or even my own thoughts are coming at me with weapons ready to attack. Let me tell you that your heart doesn’t have to respond in fear, and especially then, you can be confident knowing that you are a child of God and nothing can overtake you.

Psalm 139:13–14
For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.

How I love this verse. When everything about me feels wrong and broken and I feel like a misfit in this world, I can rely on the fact that God created me just the way I am on purpose. Not a single one of us were a mistake. You were fearfully and wonderfully made by an Almighty God who does everything on purpose. That right there is enough reason to walk with your head held high! Full of confidence and knowing the truth that you are significant, important and highly valued in the sight of God.

Blessings, Kevin
